WGC Accenture Match Play 17th - 21st February 2010

It's one of those kind of golf courses that lulls you into a false sense of security

It's the first US visit of 2010 for Lee, who plays in the WGC Accenture Match Play, at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Tucson.  Lee, who last year said, "I think there is more luck involved in this tournament than in any other", has never gone any further than the second round in this event (2009, 2008, 2005 and 2002).  However, Lee's form is much better than this time last year. He already has 12 more world ranking points this year than he had in June last year!

2010 will not see either Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods in the matches, after they decided not to play.

Lee, top seed in the Gary Player group, played Chris Wood in the first match.  Wood took the first hole but the match was back to A/S when Lee birdied the 4th.  He then won the 6th, 7th and 9th, but Chris birdied 10 and 11 to take Lee back to 1-up. Lee won the 12th and 17th with birdies to win the match 3-up and one to play.

"I played steady. I wouldn't say I played great", he said.  "I used the experience in a couple of places. Chris gave me a couple of holes that he shouldn't have done. I kind of feel like I skated on a couple of holes. It was one of those match play games where I was always in front"

Lee hopes his form this year, has carried over to this event.  " I've done well in stroke play events really by just eating away at them. I'm that kind of player, I don't really sort of explode in three or four rounds. I have a little bit of problem in the match play events because they're all 18-holes, just a short period of time and you really have to be fast off the mark. That's sometimes a problem for me. You've got to understand in your own mind you're going to have close matches"

And admitted, "It's one of those kind of golf courses that lulls you into a false sense of security".

Lee lost to Nick Watney in the second round.  He went 1-up at the 2nd but Watney took the 3rd, 6th and 11th to go 2-up, until Lee made a valliant attempt to pull back, when he birdied the 12th and eagled 13 to take the match back to all square. However, Watney won the 14th and 15th to win the match 2 & 1

"I would say 14 was a turning point," Watney said. "Lee holed a bunker shot out for eagle on the 13th and I was able to birdie the next hole. That really kind of gained my momentum back."

Lee earned € 69,190 in prize money and is now 8th in the Race to Dubai (€366,366) and remains 4th in WR.
