WESTWOOD LAUNCHES ACADEMY - PRESS RELEASE 2009

Lee Westwood will launch his golf academy for kids and juniors immediately after this year's Open Championship in July.
The Ryder Cup star and winner of 29 worldwide tournaments was at The Belfry on Thursday 5th February to announce details of the new initiative backed by The co-operative, Ping, Solarsport and the British Junior Golf Tour.

"I've had a lot from golf and now's the time to give something back," said Westwood at the official unveiling of the Lee Westwood Academy.
"I sat down with my manager Chubby about six months ago and we decided this was the best way I could help youngsters get a start in the game. I'm really looking forward to seeing how things go this summer and hopefully for many more".

The three-day academies will be held at nine different venues across England in the 10 days after The Open at Turnberry and are open to boys and girls of all abilities between the ages of seven and 16. Coaching, instruction, competition and just about everything to do with golf will feature and a qualifier from each venue will spend a day golfing with Lee at Lindrick Golf Club on August 31.
Lee will also visit each academy and meet all those participating.

Patrick Allen, The co-operative Group's Marketing Director, commented: "We are absolutely delighted to be working with Lee to support the Academy. The partnership allows us to reinforce The co-perative's 'Good For Everyone' brand campaign in 2009, whilst associating ourselves with a high profile sporting role model.

"The scheme takes place in communities and promotes participation and inclusion for children and families, so it was a natural fit with our brand values. We'll be working hard to involve our staff and our customers in the activity, integrate the sponsorship across all our businesses and promote our association to a wide audience."

John Clark, Managing Director, PING Europe. added: "Lee has been a fantastic PING ambassador for 20 years and we are delighted to put our full backing behind his new Golf Academies. I have no doubt that the success and professionalism that Lee has shown in his career will go a long way to contributing to the success of this project".

As an extension to their leading sports suncare range of products, Lancashire based Solarsport has recently expanded their interests designing and developing an exciting Solarsport branded bottled drinks line. Following discussions with ISM and Lee, a new sports re-hydration drink has been secretly formulated for Lee to use on Tour. Campaigned under the strapline 'H2O for Heroes' the drink is aimed at encouraging youngsters (and adults) to get active, fit and eat and drink healthily - a topic close to Lee as a concerned father of two. To further the relationship with Lee, Solarsport has become a partner of the Academy and will provide water and sunscreen to all attendees.

The British Junior Golf Tour welcomed the initiative and said it was delighted to be a partner of something involving one of the world's best players.
